Vasectomy Procedure
Till now we have discussed about vasectomy, what it is, where is it performed. Here in this section we will discuss about the vasectomy procedure. The procedure:
Vasectomies are performed in the clinics. In the surgery local anesthesia is used. The doctor makes a small cut in the man's scrotum or the testis bag (the sac containing the testicles) and closes the vas deferens, the tube which carries the sperms from the testicles, with permanent sutures and severs the tube between the ties. The ends are cauterized (burned or seared) to decrease the chances of leaking or growing back together. Removal of at least 15 mm of vas deferens is recommended. In this way the sperms are kept out of contacting the semen. The man can still have erections and ejaculate semen but his semen would no longer contain sperms to make a woman pregnant.
Vasectomy has been found to be the most effective method of birth control and contraception, with a maximum of 0.15 pregnancies per 100 men (1 in 700) in the first year after the procedure. It is very much effective if it is correctly used. Correct use means using condoms or contraceptive methods consistently for at least 20 ejaculations or for 3 months after the surgery whichever comes first.
The cost of a vasectomy surgery is also quite low. It is affordable by almost everybody. For further details about the cost of vasectomy surgery read our next section.
